GrapeFest 2010

Today, the Coxes learned something the hard way. Those "no parking" signs they put in our yard on TCU football game days... not just for show. Bryan parked his car in front of our house on the street this afternoon -- necessary sometimes because of our dogs and the arrangement of our driveway inside our fenced backyard -- and came outside to find a $100 parking ticket. Ouch! Discussion with the officer was fruitless, which was not unexpected. Hopefully we'll have good luck contesting it!

In any case, we needed a family diversion to prevent escalating fury at the FW police, who I'm sure had good intentions about the flow of traffic in our neighborhood. So, we decided to take a trip up to Grapevine to check out GrapeFest. The event website led us to believe that this was a moderately sophisticated affair, complete with a "culinary tent," wine tasting venues, art sales, and a chance to get a little dirty stomping grapes or popping champagne corks. Bon soiree! Should be worth the half-hour drive.

After arriving to find cramped parking in an open field (with no event supervision!), we were happy to find that the shuttle service was easy and quick. We arrived to GrapeFest, and quickly realized this was going to be more like the county fair -- complete with fried Oreos, funnel cake, and carnival rides. The "culinary tent" was not actually for eating (boo!), although I'm sure some of the demonstrations there were good. Thankfully, the KidZone turned out to be great, and Carson spent at least an hour riding tricycles and playing in a giant sandbox with a throng of other toddlers. (apparently there was an exotic animal petting zoo? we couldn't find it.) Then, we took a quick spin through the rides; here are Carson and Bryan riding the Carousel. Carson chose to ride the monkey. Is that weird?

The wine tasting was not as heavily featured as I thought it would be, and the choices at the general concession stand were "red" and "white." We ended up with beer (Landshark Lager) and tacos from the Burrito Barn. Since we were at a fair, we topped it all off with this giant funnel cake. (mmm... funnel cake...)

An interesting experience... maybe we'll try it again in a few years when Carson is tall enough to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl.
